To support the Workers Compensation Board (WCB) of Prince Edward Island in fostering a culture of workplace safety, Sandbox developed a total of eight online training modules focused on occupational health and safety and work disability prevention. Aimed at both workers and employers in PEI, the training was designed to modernize WCB’s educational approach through the use of engaging, media-rich content that resonates with diverse learners.

Using Articulate Rise, each course incorporates interactive exercises, quizzes, and custom-designed visual assets to encourage active participation. Unlike traditional text-heavy modules, this initiative prioritizes clarity and accessibility through visual storytelling, reduced written content, and motion design videos embedded throughout the learning experience. Final modules were delivered in SCORM format with English captioning to ensure accessibility and seamless integration into learning management systems.

The project was guided by a strong emphasis on human-centered learning, seeking to instill not only knowledge but also an emotional connection to the core principles of workplace safety. Each module was developed with the learner’s perspective in mind, turning occupational health and safety from a compliance requirement into a relatable, empowering experience.

Interactive features and motion graphics enhanced user engagement, while thoughtfully crafted scripts and animations helped communicate complex ideas with clarity and empathy. This approach aligned with WCB PEI’s mission to support the safe return home of every worker, every day—creating training that speaks directly to the lived experiences of workers, supervisors, and employers alike.

This initiative forms part of a broader movement to transform safety training across sectors by making it more immersive, intuitive, and impactful. It went beyond simply sharing information; it aimed to shift attitudes and influence behaviour through a combination of narrative-driven animations, hands-on activities, and striking visuals. By doing so, the training helped shape a shared understanding of responsibility and prevention in the workplace.

The project demonstrates how modern instructional design—when rooted in empathy and creativity—can support organizational goals while making a meaningful difference in learners’ lives. As a completed and well-received initiative, it stands as a relevant and successful model for other organizations seeking to elevate their safety training programs.
